In 2010 my life changed forever. I started the year with a major business deal going sour and my father being diagnosed with lung cancer. Over the next few months I lost my mother (from an accident) and my marriage (from….well, that’s another story). My friends remained faithful and were an incredible source of strength to me during this dark time in my life. (My father remains in good health and is in remission)
Several months after my marriage separation, I made a decision to travel and visit friends overseas. Around the same time, two different friends encouraged me to see a movie at the cinemas called “Eat, Pray, Love”. I still remember the awkward feeling I had looking around the cinema, seeing that I was the only guy, and thinking, “Oh no, this is a chick flick!!” (a movie designed to make girls cry) Whatever awkward feelings I might have had quickly vanished as I was swept away with the storyline acted out by Julia Roberts. In a nutshell (guys version)…… a lady goes through a divorce, travels to 3 different countries, rediscovers herself, learns to forgive, learns to let go, learns to move on, learns to trust, and then finally love again. I left the cinema thinking “I should travel for a few months like the woman in the movie” The idea was born……
One year later I set out on my own amazing adventure. My (guys version) summary is: I travel across 14 different countries, taking my friend Troy part of the journey, we try anything new, we do everything dangerous, we greet everyone we can, we laugh, we pray……and hope to find love. It was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I left Australia with just one question, “What now?” I was seeking a new direction, and a new identity. I returned a new man. ……..oh, and I did find love 😉
This blog is a snapshot of my current and past journey. I hope you enjoy reading my reflections.
